About Dr. Peter V. Choy
The Beginning of Dr. Peter V. Choy’s Nearly Five-Decade Long Career in Medicine
Dr. Choy was born in Placetas, Cuba; he studied at Havana Military School before moving to New York in the United States as a refugee under the “Peter Pan Project.” As an adult, he traveled to Spain and attended Medical School at the Complutense University of Madrid. Dr. Choy graduated in 1973, having earned honors in Cardiology, Pharmacology, and Pediatrics.
On his return to the United States, the US Army Reserve drafted Dr. Choy into the Medical Corps. He did his Internship at the Catholic Medical Center in New York; his first year was in Internal Medicine and all rotations.
In 1975, Dr. Choy took the New Jersey Exam and obtained his medical license. Only a year later, he started as a senior and rotated only in Cardiology and Intensive Care. In addition, he began work at the only PaceMaker Clinic in New York under Dr. Nick DeFrancis. At this clinic, Dr. Peter V Choy became an expert in the insertion and management of the Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump. Along with his mastery of the IABP, he learned and perfected his Right Side Cardiac Catheterization methods.
When Dr. Peter V. Choy’s medical residency finished, he worked at St. John’s Queens Hospital as an ER Physician. Later, Dr. Choy became Chief Medical Resident. Under his duties, he supervised all medical residents in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. In addition, Dr. Choy became Director of the Pacemaker Clinic and Attending Assistant in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, overseeing the residents in PaceMaker Insertions and Right-Side Cardiac Catheters. Finally, as time moved forward and Dr. Choy continued learning and mastering various areas of his medical career, he earned the seat as Chairman of Infectious Diseases.
While attending all of these positions and keeping up with his responsibilities, Dr. Choy continued to serve in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, promoted to the rank of Captain.
Opening His Own Practice
In 1980, Dr. Peter V Choy opened his private practice in Maspeth, New York. He continued to work in his practice until 1990 when he was again drafted by the US Army Medical Corps and stationed in Walter Reed Medical Center. The Army deployed Dr. Choy to Saudi Arabia for “Desert Storm,” and he returned as a Colonel to the United States. In 1993, an Honorable Discharge was awarded to Dr. Choy for his US Army Medical Corps service.
After he departed from the Army, he continued his private practice until 1997, when he began working between Miami, FL, and New York, NY.
Finally, in 1998, Dr. Peter V. Choy moved to Miami and joined Dr. Andres Candela, continuing his practice at Mercy Hospital until 2015. In that year moved his practice to Coral Gables until 2018.
Later, Dr. Choy worked as a primary doctor in a private clinic. After that, he retook his private practice and moved to Larkin’s Hospital Campus in Southern Miami, where his office holds its present location.

While his many educational degrees and awards in medicine and his positions on numerous medical boards attest to his deep knowledge and experience, Dr. Choy also values excellent bedside manner and inclusivity in his practice.
